About
Romansh is a Rhaeto-Romance language spoken in the canton of Grisons in Switzerland. It is one of the oldest Romance languages, and its name translates to “Roman-like.”Although it is one of the four official languages of Switzerland, only 0.5% of Swiss people listed it as one of their main languages in a 2021 study by the Swiss Federal Statistical Office. Romansh was born in 15 B.C. when the Romans conquered Rhaetia (which contains the present-day canton of Grisons), and the language of the soldiers mixed with that of the natives. It contains some Germanic words and structures due to a large influx of German construction workers to the area in the 1400s. Now, the language is largely unheard-of by most of the world. Romansh is spoken almost exclusively in the canton of Grisons, and it is mainly spoken on a daily basis by older people. The younger generation tends to move away from Grisons, and they begin to speak the language of their new home as their main language.
