About

N|uu is a Tuu language spoken in South Africa. Its closest living language relative is Taa, another extremely endangered language spoken in Southern Africa. N|uu is known for its heavy use of clicking. Before European colonizers arrived in Africa, the language was widely spoken. However, after their arrival, many speakers were forced to hide their language and switch to Afrikaans, Khoekhoe, or English. As of now, only one native speaker of the N|uu language remains: the 91 year old Katrina Esau. Although there have been revitalization efforts for N|uu, including the spread of the language through books, videos, and language schools, it is almost inevitable that the language will go extinct in the very near future.
