About

Gurindji is a Pama-Nyungan Australian Aboriginal language that is spoken by the Gurindji and Ngarinyman people. It is spoken in the Northern Territory of Australia by only around 600 speakers, and only around 175 of those can speak and understand the language fluently. The language is generally only used between friends and families, and only amongst older generations. Although the language has been taught in school, it is generally rare to find classes in the language, and very few people learn it. Gurindji Kriol is an emerging mixed language that is based on the Gurindji language. It emerged in the 1970s due to code-switching practices. Gurindji Kriol is now spoken on a daily basis in many Gurindji communities.
