About

Dungan is a Sinitic language spoken by the Dungan people in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. The Dungan people are descendants of the Hui people, a Mulsim group that migrated to the region from China in the late 1700s as a result of the failure of the Dungan Revolt. The Dungan language stemmed from Central Plains Mandarin, a dialect of Mandarin that is spoken in southern and central China. Central Plains Mandarin, especially Shaanxi and Gansu dialects, can be mutually intelligible with Dungan. Dungan is sometimes considered to be a variety of Mandarin, but it is written in the Cyrillic alphabet and spoken in an accent that resembles that of the Russian language. Now, Dungan is primarily spoken in small communities in dominantly Russian speaking countries, and most communication is conducted in the Russian language. Dungan is still used amongst family and friends, and there are some Dungan language classes in Dungan communities. However, younger generations are beginning to transition fully to the Russian language.
