About
Domari is an Indo-Aryan language that is spoken by the Dom people. Frequently referred to as “gypsies,” the Dom people live in small communities throughout Africa, the Middle East, and some parts of Europe. Nearly all known Domari speakers are bilingual in the main language of the country or area they reside in, and Domari is not commonly spoken outside of Dom communities. The Domari language is not usually written, so it is easily influenced by other languages that Domari speakers use. Although the Dom people are widespread, the language is slowly being pushed out by official languages of hosting countries. There are some institutes for learning the languages in certain Dom communities, but the language is still very endangered.
