About
Danau is an Austroasiatic language primarily spoken in the Shan state of Myanmar. The language is spoken in three villages, all of which are located in the divide between two areas with different languages: Burmese and Shan. The Danau people mainly practice agriculture, and because of their geographic location, all trade and commerce is conducted in Burmese or Shan. Because of this, much of the younger generation is learning these languages as a primary language, and many children aren’t learning Danau at all. Although around 10,000 people identify as Danau, only a few speak the language, and only a few of those speak the language fluently. Danau is primarily used between friends, and it is only used by the older generation.
