About
Arrernte is a Pama-Nyungan Australian Aboriginal language spoken in central Australia, especially around the Alice Springs area. The language has a strong support system in the area. Primary schools and high schools in Alice Springs, as well as some central Australian colleges, offer classes in Arrernte. Workers in Alice Springs are also encouraged to learn Arrernte, and there are some television and radio stations that offer channels in the language. However, there are still only around 3,000 people that speak that language, and very few children learn it as a first language. It is not generally used for communication, even amongst older generations.
